Progress on greenway water points

Greenway users may be able to avail of new water points later this year, last week’s Athlone Municipal District meeting heard.

It's hoped to have progress on installation of new water points along the Old Rail Trail and in some locations in Athlone by March, Green Cllr Louise Heavin was told the meeting on foot of a motion passed on the issue in September.

“Resources had not been available to assess the feasibility and scope of the project in 2019,” the council stated in a reply to the question, however, the good news is that it is intended to progress the water points in “the first half of 2020”.

Cllr Heavin asked if any of the water points will actually be in place in the first half of the year, to which director of service Barry Kehoe replied that he “hopes so” and will revert to councillors in March once they identify the locations for the new water dispensing points.

Mr Kehoe reminded members that there will be a bill from Irish Water for the initiative.
