Westmeath discus thrower going to Youth Olympics

North Westmeath AC's Eoin Sheridan has been selected for the Ireland squad for next month's Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China.

The highly rated discus thrower and current national champion is one of five track and field athletes chosen for the 16 strong team. The Youth Olympics get underway in China on August 17.

Eoin and the rest of Team Ireland leave shortly for their pre-games training camp at the Hong Kong Sports Institute, before transferring to Nanjing.

The young athlete is heading to the Orient in great form. In addition to recently winning the gold medal at the All England Athletic Championships in London, last weekend he won the U18 national title with ease, finishing with seven metres to spare on his nearest competitor.
