Summer golf fest

The first of the Summer Golf Fests took place in the club over last weekend.On Thursday, Hughie and Tommy Conlon (Gents) along with Dermot and Kay Kenny (Ladies), hosted a singles competition, with victory in the Gents competition going to Jimmy Digan, who shot 2-under par in difficult conditions.Mary Rose Coughlan took victory in the Ladies" event. Lombard Ireland were in charge on Friday and Finn Martin once again ensured a successful social occasion at the club in the evening. Congratulations to PJ McCormack, whose 42pts was enough to take first prize.Saturday proved the most popular event with over 50 teams participating in the 3-person Rumble, sponsored by the Auld Shebeen and Grand Hotel (Liam and John Joe Claffey). The winners were Frank and Mary Egan and John Henry. With a major counterattraction in Croke Park, Sunday was less busy, but thanks to sponsors, Behan Fruit and Veg (Phil and Betty Behan) the day was a successful one. The winners are available on the Website. The second stage of the Golf Fest continues this Thursday to Sunday and the improving weather conditions should contribute to a successful few days golf. Away from home, Brendan Kehoe/Johnny Mullally found the going tough and eventually conceded on the 15th. Kit Geoghegan/PJ McCormack were also involved in a tough battle on the 18th tee when news came through of the three home victories. Damien Farrell/Trevor Hill had an early victory, closing out their match on the 13th, while Michael Glennon/Padraig Keenan, after a shaky start, won 5 holes in a row to add victory number two on hole 15. Willie Digan/Conor McGuinness found it hard to shake off their determined opposition. This win puts him in the frame for another International Cap this year and we wish him the best of luck in the remaining championships.Meanwhile the Under-18 (boys) squad qualified for the semi-finals of the Junior Foursomes at Co Meath Golf Club on Tuesday. Paul Coughlan/Ian Flanagan shot 1-over par on the back nine to set up this victory, while James Egan/Jamal Sabir finished the task with some style when they were just 6-over in testing conditions. They were unlucky to lose out in the semi-final to eventual winners, Naas, at the same venue on Wednesday morning.
