Smoke keeps rising
Last Saturday"s card at Mullingar featured the two semi-finals of the Heineken Midland Oaks. Roscommon.Rising Smoke, which has been unbeaten throughout, went to traps the 5/4 favourite in the first semi-final from a level break.She led, into the first bend, and thereafter she made all the running to win by an extending eight lengths from French Katie in 29.79. The winner is owned by the 'Ten For Out' syndicate, Sligo, and is trained by Gerry Holian.Mrs. J. McCormack"s (Offaly) Fahy Angie produced a very impressive front-running display to take the second semi-final in 30.21. Odds on in the betting market, she dominated the pace all the way to win by two and a half lengths from Miss Bright.In a moderate opening race over the 525 yards course, Sean O"Reilly"s (Longford) Cranley Aishling emerged best from the field at the turn from home to win by two and a half lengths from Ballycoolan Star in 30.37.John Boyce"s (Mullingar) Another Branwin, although off the pace in the early stages of the second race, hit the front rounding the final bend to do the business by three and a half lengths from Ayers Rock in 30.69.The Tommy Bolton-trained and the Tony Griffin (Roscommon) owned Peppered Sprout, which was easy to back at 3/1, produced the goods from a flying start in the third over the 400 yards course by an extending four lengths from Ballyhawk Wizard in 22.11.The fourth race was decided over the 600 yards trip and here Aidan O"Donnell"s (Meath) Boola Valley always had the edge over the field when leading home by two and a half lengths from Artful Nelly in 34.47.Spellathon, owned by Joe Bray (Navan), which was a 5/2 choice in the fifth race over the 525 yards trip raced ahead from the opening bend to score by three and a half lengths from Weezie Or What in 30.33.Rathellis, which ran in the ownership of Pauric Kelly (Kildare), was well supported in the seventh race where he made practically every yard of the running to land this touch by three lengths from Ohmy Ohme in 21.94.Matthew Lenane"s (Rathangan) Fairy Fountain, although led for most of the journey in the ninth race by Spring Well Sindy and Cupid"s Risk, produced a successful late challenge to win by seven lengths in 31.30.Glory Johnny, which is trained by Eddie Dunne for Limerick owners Patrick and Jim O"Connor, opened his winning account at the eleventh time of asking. Easy to back at 3/1, he led all the way from a lively start to score by a closing one length from the well-supported Castlehill Molly in 30.62.The Susan Price-trained and the Kop End Syndicate (Mullingar) owned Aimee Lees Pride completed the night"s action when powering home two lengths to the good from Notanine in 31.92 over the 330 yards course.Timahoe Jack Beston ThursdayThe very cold unseasonable weather on Thursday October 2 left the attendance at Mullingar Greyhound Stadium on the small side where all eleven races were graded. The best return of the session was posted in the 525 yards first race by Timahoe Jack which is owned in Roscommon by Michael McPhillips. From a very fast start, he made every yard of the running to score by five lengths from Miss Andrettie in 30.02.Inny Thia broke in front in the 525 yards second race and held on all the way to win by as short head from fast-finishing Could Be Kid in 30.53. The winner was recording her first success on her second outing for her Oldcastle joint owners, Brian Gibney and Oliver Fitzpatrick.Enfield trainer, Jacqueline Lawlor, supplied the winner of the 400 yards third race and Trapper Tony, which she trains for the Limerick Barracks Syndicate. Baffled Joe broke in front and led into the home straight where Trapper Tony came from off the pace to snatch victory by one length in 22.26.Glanmore Mist did the business in the 525 yards fourth race for Dundalk owner Kenneth Finnegan. After taking control in the early stages, she made all the running to hold off the late challenge of Snooker Bluestar by one and a quarter lengths in 30.53.In the 400 yards fifth race Tinks Diamond broke in front and held on under pressure from Wobbler all the way to win by one length in 22.41 for his Killashee (Longford) Handler, Mark Adams.To Far Out broke in front in the 600 yards sixth race, and led into the home straight where Pretty Nicola came from way off the pace to claim the spoils by two lengths in 34.21. The winner is trained in Co. Meath by David Carberry for Mrs. R. and Mrs. B. Carberry.Tio Woods came into the 400 yards seventh race from the reserve panel and duly did the business for his trainer, Frank Seery, and Rhode owner, David Hanlon. From a level break he avoided bunching at the first bend and went on to win by two and a half lengths from Time Saver in 22.43. Mullingar owner Joe Gavin supplied the winner of the 55-0 yards eighth race with Bombay Blonde. Having been led to the last bend by Rasher Head and Peggy"s Angel, she found top gear into the home straight to win by three lengths in 31.55.In the 400 yards ninth race, Leyton Jenny and Great Kuni led into the home straight where Eyepod came from off the pace in the late stages to snatch victory by one and three quarter lengths in 22.16. The winner is trained in Geashill (Tullamore) by Marie Garry for Edmond Garry.Sean Cocoman supplied the winner of the 525 yards tenth race with Lismar Daisy, which he trains for Rhode owners Pascal and Derek Kellaghan. From a level break, she took the lead in the back straight and went on to score by two and a half lengths from Innfield Lady in 30.31.Crash Magic did the business in the 525 yards eleventh race for her Mountmellick owner, Cyril Morris.
