Weather washes out hamper competition"s second leg
Saturday"s incessant rain from lunchtime caused the course to be virtually unplayable on Sunday morning, leaving the course and competition committee with no option but to postpone the second leg of the Mileage Tyres sponsored men"s Christmas hampers competition.New arrangements for the completion of the competition will be posted at the week end. So much for playing the event in September to avoid the winter conditions!Family combinations to the fore in confined match play eventsThe final of the men"s fourball, mixed foursomes and foursomes match play events have been concluded with the following results. In the fourball the winners were the father and son pairing of Joe and Mark Kelly, who beat the combination of Seamus Berry and Eamon Shaw on the last green after a Titanic battle. The beaten semi finalists were Ronan Murtagh and James McWalter and Ken Berry and Martin Gavin. The final of the Hayes Coghlan men"s foursomes had another father and son combination John and Mark Keane up against the formidable pairing of Shay O"Toole and in-form Tommy Frayne and after some very fine golf the game went down to the wire with the former winning a very close match.. The beaten semi finalists were: Kieran Smith and Eddie Casey and the John Maher/Michael Duffy combination. In the club mixed foursomes there was the husband and wife pairing of Ted and Margaret Eighan, former winners, pitted against our ex-officio captain Frank McKeon and his sister in law Carmel Monaghan, who performed some "giant killing" acts right through the competition and continued their exploits with an eighteenth hole victory on Thursday last. The beaten semi finalists were Paddy Caulfield and Joan Heery and Kay Browne and Tom Daly. The finalists in the Bill Collentine men"s singles matchplay are Frank McGinty and Brendan Buckley. Both are there on merit after a long campaign and it would be very difficult to predict a winner. They will play their match within the coming week.Men"s seniors" golfThe return match with Strandhill golf club"s seniors took place on Tuesday 29th September in what could be described as difficult conditions. A total of thirty two made the journey from Sligo which made the competition very enjoyable. The locals managed to edge clear with a superior points total on the day, however, the Strandhill boys had done enough on their home ground to ensure the retention of the Mileage Trophy for another year. John Cunningham had the best local return on the day. October 7th sees the return of the Tuesday golf and all are welcome.Leinster Schools GolfCongratulations to members on the St Mary"s CBS schools team who led the qualifiers in their regional round last week in Tullamore.
