Men"s Hampers competition come to a conclusion

In conditions that could only be described as appalling, the second round of the Mileage Tyres Christmas Hampers competition concluded over the past weekend). The "seasonal" rain on Saturday curtailed the field on that day to a mere handful, I"m told and caused the conditions to be almost unplayable on Sunday.Nevertheless there were a number of good scores returned over the course of the competition, most notable of these were forty points from Tommy Frayne, who regrettably lost out on a technicality and as with Padraig Harrington in The Belfry a few years ago accepted his fate sportingly. In the second leg on that awful day of wind and rain, on Saturday October 4 Dessie Morgan returned a tremendous seventy gross, one of the rounds of the year or indeed the decade. The popular winner of the first prize was nineteen handicapper Peter Dunne with seventy points. Peter got home by the narrowest of margins from a trio of competitors. The presentation of those prizes and all outstanding prizes will take place on Sunday, November 9 at 5pm.Mileage Hampers full resultsWinner - Peter Dunne (19) 70 points; runner-up - Des Morgan (+2) 69 points;Best gross - Dan Grehan (7) 55 gross points; third - John Lyons (22) 69 points; seniors - Pat Eighan (12); first 18 - Joe Kelly (8) 37 points; second 18 - Kevin Plunkett (14) 32 points; fourth - Patrick Curran (14) 65 points.Team winners Paul McGann and Mark Keane (first) and Kit Loughrey and John Lyons (second).Seniors GolfThe men"s seniors got out playing at last on Tuesday, October 21 and the good number enjoyed a fine day for a change. There was some hot scoring with the first prize going to Tom Mulvee with 27 points over the 12 holes; the second spot went to Matt Talbot. Our Captain, Pat Keenaghan finished in third spot with John O"Hara receiving the super seniors" award. The highlight of the day was a hole in one at the fifth from Michael Kearns, the club I believe he used was a five iron.Congratulations also to Patsy Fagan who achieved a similar feat at the 15th a couple of weeks ago. Next week"s event is again over twelve holes and preparations are well in hand for the Christmas Hampers competition.Plans are afoot for the Captain"s (Pat) and Lady Captain"s (Miriam) dinners on Friday week and the following Friday respectfully and the AGMs on November 16 and 19 respectively.Grange Motors singles next week endWeather permitting, the men"s committee hope to run the already deferred Grange Motors sponsored singles competition; notices re conditions of same have been posted on the appropriate boards.
