Grow holding local conference on mental health

'Our mental health is not a given. It"s something that needs to be nurtured from the time we are born, and right through our life,' says Michele Kerrigan CEO of GROW.GROW a Mental Health Organisation which helps people who have suffered, or are suffering from, mental health problems.Founded in Australia in 1957 by a group of people who had formerly suffered from mental health problems, GROW has gone from strength to strength, and now has a national network of over 130 groups in Ireland.'We run a 12 step programme to recovery, and our members attend a two-hour meeting once a week,' explains Kerrigan.Very much about people helping other people, recovery is task-orientated and takes place within a group setting.'Many of our members are affected by depression, anxiety, panic attacks or they may be suffering as the result of physical or sexual abuse,' adds Kerrigan.Members recover at different paces and usually stay for anywhere between six months and several years. Each group is supported by a Fieldworker, although they are often there to monitor rather than control, as it is the members who provide mutual support to each other. As members progress they are encouraged to take more responsibility by participating in leadership courses and roles.'There is also a social aspect to GROW, and members can meet up for a cup of coffee. This can be a wonderful support as many people suffering from mental health problems can feel isolated. Members also get support by listening to others in the group as they often identify with the experiences being discussed,' explains Kerrigan.Later this year GROW are launching an online support service, aimed at younger users and those who are geographically isolated from services. They are also hosting a conference "Promoting Positive Mental Health in Young Adults" . This conference takes place on Wednesday 24th June in the Tullamore Court Hotel. Booking is through the GROW Office, Tullamore, phone 057 9351124. Speakers include Dr. Tony Bates (Headstrong) , Martin Rogan HSE , Dr Terry Lynch and young adult speakers. All are welcome.
