Garda dog unit flown in to assist in high speed chase

A member of the Garda dog unit had to be flown in to assist Gardaí on Thursday last after suspects involved in a high speed chase between Ballymahon and Mullingar fled the scene in the Bunbrosna area.Twenty members of the Garda Siochana from the Mullingar, Delvin, Athlone, Roscommon, Granard areas, as well as the Garda Helicopter and Garda Dog Unit, were involved in the pursuit of four suspects, believed to be from the Dublin area, gave chase in a car and stolen jeep.At 5.50pm on June 18, Gardaí in Mullingar were alerted to intercept a jeep and a car travelling at high speed from Ballymahon to Mullingar. The jeep was believed to have been taken without the owner"s consent earlier in Roscommon.The two vehicles turned off the Ballymahon road and headed towards Bunbrosna. Not long after turning onto the Bunbrosna road, the two vehicles were involved in a traffic accident.Gardaí arrived a short time later and arrested one at the scene, while another was taken to hospital for treatment in Mullingar. Two people escaped on foot into the nearby fields. The assistance of the Garda helicopter and Garda Dog Unit were summoned and following searches carried out, one more person was arrested later that evening near the scene.A file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions in relation to the incident.
