Special Kilbeggan casks take 'grand' journey
To mark the 50th anniversary of the end of the use of the grand canal for commercial transport, two specially selected casks of Kilbeggan whiskey will embark on the journey from Kilbeggan to Dublin. The casks of 'Grand Crew' were chosen by seven experts from the Irish Whiskey Society last May, for the celebration which will take place on August 29 and the shipment will be the first of its kind for over five decades. The event is being organised by the Inland Waterways Association of Ireland, the Heritage Boat Association, the 107B restoration barge project, Kilbeggan Harbour Amenity Group, Cooley distillery and the Irish Whiskey Society. When the tipple arrives in Dublin it will then be bottled and presented to surviving Grand Canal boatmen at a special reception to be held in the capital. There are around 40 former canal workers still living in Ireland. A limited number of bottles of 'Grand Crew' will then be made available to the public.'Grand Crew' is a single cask, single malt whiskey. It is being bottled at cask strength (almost 60 per cent) as this is the strength at which whiskey was typically shipped in cask by canal.Kilbeggan and District NotesAnybody wishing to have a notice included in Kilbeggan and District Notes please drop it into the SWEETS Office, The Crescent, Kilbeggan or alternatively Phone 0579332030.
