Tyrrellspass march on to last four as local derby ends in draw
Tyrrellspass Qualified for the eemi-Final of this year's championship after defeating Maryland in an exciting encounter last weekend.Maryland raced into an early lead and there looked like there might be a shock on the cards but thanks to three fine points from Denis Glennon, Tyrrellspass found their way and went on to claim their semi-final spot.In the second quarter-final Mullingar Shamrocks and St. Lomans must do it all again after they finished all square in Cusack Park last Sunday evening. St. Lomans came from behind to draw level with five minute left and the game could have gone either way with both sides narrowly missing chances but it was a fair result on the day with the prospect of another fine match in the replay.Greville Arms Hotel Senior Hurling ChampionshipThe semi-finals of this year's championship take place next week-end with Raharney facing up to Clonkill, a re-match of last year's county final and it already has taken a re-play to separate them in the opening round. This should be an evenly fought contest as both sides only lost one match, with Clonkill topping the losers division. Raharney will need big displays from the Greville Bros, Shaw, Jordan and Flanagan if they are to topple Clonkill who play a tough hard hitting brand of hurling with players like Mitchell, Murtagh, the Dowdall brothers and the Price Bros. Don't be surprised if this is a close one.In the second semi-final champions, Lough Lene Gaels will play Castletown-Geoghegan and with both sides capable of playing fast, open style hurling this one should be a cracker. On paper Lough Lene Gaels look to be the better team lost only one match in the competition to date and will be pushing hard to take another title with players like the Briody, Carthy, Cosgrove and McNicholas anything is possible but Castletown-Geoghegan have improved with every game and survived a tough battle in the quarter final with Castlepollard. With a strong tradition of hurling running deep among the black and ambers and with players like the Clarkes, Jacksons, Gorry, Mangan and Ronan Whelan, Castletown are well capable of causing an upset.Under 16 'B' All-Ireland HurlingThe All-Ireland Under 16 'B' Competition was held last Saturday in Westmeath with fantastic displays of the skills of the game from all competing teams. This was a wonderful days entertainment far any hurling fan. It was an historic occasion for Westmeath GAA as it was the first time that the Adrian Murray Cup was being presented to the winners. If there was a down side to the day it was the poor attendance at the finals, which were held in Cusack Park that evening.Great credit must go to the organising committee for the wonderful efficient manner in which the competition was held, and to the three clubs for the use of their facilities Kinnegad, St. Loman's, Mullingar and St. Oliver Plunketts, Mullingar. All three venues were immaculately presented. Thanks also must go to all the people who helped on the day running the lines and umpiring at all the matches.County Camogie FinalsThe Senior and Junior Camogie finals take place next weekend with two mouthwatering clashes in prospect. In the Senior final Raharney take on St. Munnas on Friday evening at 6.30pm in Cusack Park while on Sunday evening at 6.30pm in St. Loman's Lakepoint Park, Clonkill will play Drumraney in the Junior Final. Best of luck to all teams in the Finals.Coaching and GamesCompetiton hotting up for the CÚL day out!Children from all over the country are in with a chance of playing in the world famous Croke Park stadium this September 28 at the VHI GAA CÚL Day Out.VHI GAA CÚl Day Out is a very special event that will see 240 children realise their dreams and train and play games (a match) in the world-famous stadium.
