Innovation promised for St Patrick's Day parade

Fire eaters, stilt walkers and jugglers are amongst the exciting acts performing at this year's St. Patrick's day parade in Mullingar town centre, and the organisers say that there are some very innovative - and quirky - floats planned for the event. The parade has become one of the finest in the country since its resurrection a few years back after a period of dormancy, and this week, committee treasurer, Fergus Hilliard, said the committee said they expect it to be as good as the last three years. He said: "It is going to be a highlight of the year again," he told the Westmeath Examiner. As the floats, the bands and the various other participating groups pass through the town, the novelty performers will mingle with the crowds. As well as the parade, the organisers are aiming to have several music stages around town on which there will be live bands performing. Organisers are seeking agreement from the Gardai for five stages, each with their own style of music, such as the rock stage planned for Friar street and traditional music stage for Mount St.Confirmed acts include The Tennessee Breakdown Band, The Egg and Spoons and, on the world themed stage, Nigerian funk-reggae band Toluking. The music is planned to start around 1.30pm and last until the parade, which runs from Green Bridge to Dublin Bridge, begins at 4pm.Stage Craft Ireland are performing an environment themed street theatre show and children can lookout for some of their favourite cartoon and TV characters.Local businesses, sporting groups, social clubs and organisations use the parade to showcase what they have to offer, and even if the weather is bad, they are usually rewarded for their participation with a viewing audience of thousands. The deadline for applying for a float was Monday 01 March but if you have a creative idea, and are determined to get in, contact the organising committee as last minute applications may still be considered. The parade website is www.mullingarparade.ie or search for Mullingar St. Patrick's Day Parade on www.Facebook.com and www.bebo.com/mullingarparade for information and updates.
