Rosemary's sixty five is unbeatable
Mullingar Golf Club News -- The ladies' first major of the year drew a huge crowd of over 100 golfers. Sponsored by the Management Committee this continues to be a much coveted prize.Blustery conditions and fast greens ensured quite a few 'cricket' scores were returned for this stroke competition. Rosemary Whelehan, however, was undaunted. Playing her best golf of the year so far she took the spoils with an outstanding 65 nett. Building on her experience last year with the Silver medallist Challenge Cup squad, Rosemary played a spectacular round. Her delight in her win was clearly evident in her acceptance speech when she thanked her mentors from last year. With a score that on any other day would win any major competition in the club or, indeed, any club, Helen Moorhead was second with a fantastic 66 nett. Lucy Tormey, having won the best gross, congratulated the winners, commiserated with the rest of us and enlightened us as to the origins of her cat! Third place went to Breda Hawkshaw who has become a regular on the podium these days.Playing her first 18 holes for some time Cathy Smith won Category One. The term "beware the injured golfer" springs to mind. Sarah Pringle returned to the winner's enclosure for the second week in a row taking category two and Attracta Lennox won category three. The Senior and Junior 18 holes were won by Doreen Casey and Eileen Trapp respectively. Both nines were won by Pauline O'Hara and Bernie Mulroy whilst Erca Kelly won the beginners prize.A large crowd attended the presentation where Mr. Captain Liam Conlon presented the prizes on behalf of the Management committee.Results1st Rosemary Whelehan (28) 65 nett; 2nd Helen Moorhead (20) 66 nett; Best gross - Lucy Tormey (7) 86 gross; 3rd Breda Hawkshaw (24) 71 nett.Category 1 - Cathy Smith (14) 75 nett; Category 2 - Sarah Pringle (26) 71 nett; Category 3 - Attracta Lennox (31) 74 nett; Seniors eighteen holes - Doreen Casey (19) 75 nett; Juniors - Eileen Trapp (31) 80 nett; Front nine - Pauline O'Hara (20) 34 nett; Back nine - Bernie Mulroy (33) 33.5 nett.; Beginners - Erca Kelly.Superb scoring as Brian Thornton bags Bracken's Family Butchers prizeOne of the largest fields of the year to date contested the Bracken Family Butcher competition on Sunday last. Weather conditions were seasonal with some cold showers and a coldish breeze to contend with. From early morning the time sheet was full (still a small number guilty in relation to absenteeism) and at the close of play the winner declared by the narrow margin was Brian Thornton. His forty stableford points got him home by the minimum from his playing partner on the day Paul McGann, who is on a good run of form of late. There were other very good scores in the high thirties returned, thirty eight points handed in by Liam Cunnane and Vinnie Bagnall and several thirty seven pointers and an excellent thirty nine from Elan Darcy in the Junior section. Compliments to all for their attendance at the prize presentation on the night.Bracken's competitionfull resultsWinner: Brian Thornton (17) 40 points; second: Paul Mc Gann (18) 39 points; best gross: David Lally (scr) 34; Division 1: Greg Cleary (7) 37 points; Division 2: Liam Cunnane (15) 38 points; Division 3: Vincent Bagnall (20) 38 points, Hugh O'Neill (19) 37 points; Juniors: Elan Darcy (22) 39 points.Lady Captain's prize to the gents next week endThe attraction next week-end with the time sheet extended into Saturday due to demand is the Lady Captain's (Brege McCarrick) prize to the gentlemen members of the clubMen's seniors' golfThe large numbers continue to compete in the Tuesday competition.Again, we saw new winners emerge in the 15 hole event on April 27. In third position after a count back came Sean Cleary.Dave Hogan was back to his winning ways when taking the super senior prize. The seniors will be away in Ballykissteen on May 11. We look forward to a large turnout on May 18 for the Club Presidents Prize to the seniors.Inter club mattersThe competitive inter club scene continues and last week-end our gents Central Towns Cup side had a well merited win over Co. Longford and next week we wish the best to our Barton Cup squad as they take on Esker Hills.Rory back in the swingWasn't it fantastically exciting to see Rory McIlroy back to his brilliant best in Quail Hollow last week-end? He appeared to be swinging it like he did back in our Scratch Cup in 2005 and 2006. Did you know that his 62 score was beaten by another pro in an event in the Far East last Sunday also by no less than four strokes.
