Medals for Victoria Harris and Declan Brady

Victoria Harris made it look very easy with a convincing win in the girls 100m under 15 at the AAI National "B" Juvenile T&F Championships in Tullamore last Sunday (1st Aug), which was the last Championship track and field event for 2010.Leading from the gun after a great start, she increased her lead with every stride to cross the line well clear of the opposition to round off her track season with a well deserved win.In the boys 600m Under 13, Declan Brady paced himself perfectly and was in a great position with 250m to go but just couldn't find the extra edge to take the lead and despite a terrific battle all the way to the finish he had to settle for silver but was delighted with his medal. He went straight from the 600m medal presentation to the long jump where he added to his medal haul with another silver medal. Also competing in Tullamore was Hilary Harris where despite running very well in the girls 600m u/13 she finished out of the medal places.European ChampionshipsThe European Track and Field Championships in Barcelona were compulsive viewing on television and it was great to see Mark Christie in action in the 5,000m, although he was disappointed with his performance. He has had a great year and no doubt will be back in top form again over the cross country season. Of course a real highlight was the great performance from Derval O'Rourke in the 100m hurdles to win Ireland's only medal.Daingean Road RaceMartin Lyons battled hard in the Daingean 5km road race last Friday evening (30th July) and was very pleased with his second place finish, which was the best of the large Mullingar group that took part. Thomas Lynn finished 8th overall and first junior man, just one place ahead of Robert Yorke, with Adam Daly, Stephen Nea and Ryan Blundell also finishing well up in the junior men's race.Kieran Nolan and John Shaw were next in for Mullingar, with Lorraine Daly close behind and just beaten on the line to finish second junior lady. Also competing and running well in Daingean were Paula Murray (1st in master category), Aidan Daly, Tommy Carr, Elizabeth Carr, Michael O'Sullivan, Christy Creagh (1st in master category), Yvonne Kane, Rachel Yorke and Tom Shaw.Castlepollard Road RaceWe expect a very large number of the Club's underage and senior athletes will head to Castlepollard this Wednesday and support the very popular North Westmeath AC fixture. Underage races start at 7pm, with the senior 5km main event starting at 8pm.The prize list on offer is very attractive and judging by results in recent road races, Mullingar should feature strongly in the individual and team prizes. Also the following Wednesday evening (11th Aug), a new race on the athletics calendar is the first ever Kinnegad 5km road race. This should attract a huge entry and again a large contingent from the Club will be taking part, especially as it is so close to home.Good luck to Shane Fitzsimons in the Celtic Games International T&F in Athlone IT this Saturday where he'll compete for Ireland over 1,500m. It would be very nice to go to Athlone and cheer Shane on and support the Ireland team. The first ever World Youth Olympics takes place in Singapore, from 14th to 26th August, and among those travelling to Singapore is Bobbie Begley as a member of the Olympic Council of Ireland and we all hope he enjoys his trip to the Far East.Boyne AC Open T&F SportsThis Sunday, some of our younger athletes might like to compete in what is probably the last track meeting for most, when Boyne AC hold their popular open sports in Drogheda. See the notice board in the Club house for details.ReminderFinally, a reminder to several Club members that their membership subscription is now due, especially those who joined during last year's track and field season. Membership in our Club covers a period of 12 months from the time you join, and it includes registration and insurance, so anyone who might have overlooked renewing their membership should do so as soon as possible.Fixtures4th North Westmeath AC Castlepollard Road Race Festival4th Dublin Graded Meeting, Santry7th Celtic Games T&F, Athlone IT8th Boyne AC Open T&F Sports, Meadow View Sportsfield, Drogheda8th Crookstown-Millview AC Road Race, Limston, Co.
