U-12s pre-season pays dividends
St. Aengus (Mountrath) 1Mullingar Athletic 4Mullingar made the long journey to Mountrath last Saturday to play their first competitive fixture in the Midlands Under 12 Major League. Faced with a physically impressive St. Aengus side, the opening quarter proved to be evenly contested.Mullingar were defensively solid and as the midfield slowly began to gain more possession of the ball, several scoring chances were created. Mark Ronan always looked dangerous with his pace and the first goal came when he beat the offside trap and then shot past the St. Aengus goal keeper with a fine individual effort. The Mullingar midfield with the tenacious Alan Farrell playing a prominent role increased the pressure and Patrick Shaw worked his way free on the left. His cross beat the St. Aengus defence to find Cathal Byrne who scored from close range. Shortly before half time Josh Kiernan put Mark Ronan through again and another classy finish saw Mullingar 3-0 up at the break.Mullingar took the opportunity to make a number of changes at half time and it was very encouraging to see the team continue to play some very attractive and intelligent football. St. Aengus fought hard to get back into the game but found the centre-back combination of Paul Lynam and Jordan McCullagh very hard to break down. As they pressed forward they were vulnerable to the quick counter-attack and a clever pass from Patrick Shaw released Philip Martin into space. He showed great nerve to round the goalkeeper and coolly slotted home to seal the match. To their credit St. Aengus never gave up and their centre forward scored a fine consolation goal shortly before full time. Mullingar were deserved winners and the result reflected the effort which has been put in at training by this squad.Mullingar Athletic :G. O’Connor (captain), P. Martin, P. Lynam, J. McCullagh, P.
