Under 10 Cubs open with a win

The Cubs were the last of the Athletic Under 10 team into league action last Saturday against Brawny from Athlone. As this was their first competitive fixture there was much excitement in the air. The Cubs had a dream first fifteen minutes in the warm but breezy conditions. The many hours spent on the training pitch were evident in some fine passing and resulted in four well taken goals. The Cubs were brought down to earth in the second fifteen as a brave Brawny outfit fought back and scored two fine goals. Mullingar were shaken back into life for the final fifteen and again displayed some excellent teamwork to close out the game. The coach was delighted with this fine first outing but undoubtedly stiffer challenges lie ahead. The squad, including Luke Nangle who was disappointed to miss the game due to a broken wrist, was Adam McCormack, Anna Jones, Cormac Haran, Sam McCartan, Patrick Gantly, Max Bannon, Tom Crothers, Cormac Molloy, Philip Gray, Josh Heneghan and Ryan Fay. Under 12s continuewinning ways!Mullingar Athletic 2Killeigh 0Mullingar followed up last week’s win over Portumna with a gritty determined performance against Killeigh, and while not playing to the same level as last week they ground out a result on a difficult surface in windy conditions. The first goal came midway through the first half and was scored by Jamie Walsh, another long range effort from the left and he caught the ‘keeper out brilliantly. Killeigh fought hard to get an equaliser and almost caught the Athletic defence out just before half time but they were thwarted by a great block from midfielder, Josh Heery who took the full force of the shot in the face. The second half was all Mullingar and they attacked Killeigh relentlessly, and were unlucky not to be up another two goals but it was not until the last minute of the game when they had the ball in the Killeigh net again when Brendan O’Donnell scored a great goal after battling hard to win possession. This was not an easy win by any means and the lads deserve great credit for their efforts.Team: Ben McCabe, Shane O’Donohoe, Darragh Daly (captain), Eoghan O’Malley, Jamie Bolger, Luke Gallagher, Gearoid Sheridan, Gary Morgan, Josh Heery, Sean Cullen, Niall McGowan, Conor Gavigan, Simon McEvilly, Jamie Walsh, Brendan O’DonnellNew referee takesto to the pitchWell done to Aaron Byrne - a member of our Youths squad - who began his career as a referee in Gainstown last Saturday.
