Successful men's branch AGM as Joe takes over captaincy
There was a fine turnout of gentlemen for the first of the annual general meetings in the club. The men's branch convention took place on a very frosty Sunday evening last. All the outgoing officers' reports were well received and there was plenty of debate on the relevant topics.The outgoing captain Liam Conlon, in his address thanked all in the club for making 2010 such a memorable one for him and his family and for making the season just finished such a successful one. The incoming incumbent Joe Bracken, expressed his delight and pride at assuming the position of captain and pledged, with the continued support of the club members, to maintain the traditions of this old club.The following officers and committee were elected for the coming season and are wished the best and were assured of the support of all:Captain: Mr. Joe Bracken; President (for second year of two year term) Mr. Austin Witter; Vice captain, John G. The club annual general meeting takes place on Sunday week, December 12.Turkey team eventon Sunday nextMembers are again reminded that, if the arctic conditions disappear, there will be a four person team event on Sunday morning next with a shotgun start.The event will commence after breakfast in the clubhouse. Please enter your teams on the board in the hallway.Men SeniorsA total of seventy seven seniors competed in the first round of the âOld Standâ sponsored hamper on November 23. This was a record entry on the day and with two weeks to go we expect additions to this number.With numerous prizes on offer competition was keen. Twenty stableford points were achieved by six players but, we will have to wait for week two to get an idea from where the likely winners will emerge.Pat McKenna was the stableford winner on the countback, with 20 points for the nine holes playedOn Friday, November 26 we had a well supported and thoroughly enjoyable (despite the cold) seniors mixed four person competition.The winning combination, with a fantastic 53 points, was the team of Mary McCormack, Ann McHugh, John O'Reilly and Tony English. In second place we had the team of Ann Duffy, Ber Chambers, Simon Tormey and Brian Reidy. The team consisting of Breege McCarrick, Breda Conlon, Dave Hogan and Eamon Galligan finished a close third.The day was made complete with the excellent fare provided by Gerry and his colleagues which was much in demand.The success of the outing augurs well for similar events in the future.Ladies BranchAnother week and another delayed start to our Wednesday competition. Last week's 9 hole, three clubs event was sponsored by Hillary Shekleton. The frost of the night before meant a shotgun start at eleven o'clock was necessary to ensure everyone got a chance to play. Forty six women competed for Hillary's prize.Kay Browne took the spoils with an excellent 17points. Beside a âhot' putter Kay used a 3 wood and a 6 iron. Marjorie Donoghue took the runner-up spot with 16points. Dorothy O'Keeffe had the best gross score of the day with a delighted Gabrielle Murtagh taking third place.The final presentation of the year saw Dorothy O'Keeffe accept the Lady Captain's match play title. Tina Murphy won the Lady President's match play whilst Joanne Killian won the PGA tankard. Helen Moorhead won the silver medal and Rosemary Whelehan won the silver spoon, the bronze medal and was this year's Player of the Year.Best wishes to the incoming committee under the stewardship of Lucy Tormey.
