Order of Malta volunteers lend services to the community
Since 6am on Tuesday, November 30 the Mullingar Unit of the Order of Malta Ambulance Corps has been providing a 24 hour transport service for nurses, doctors and healthcare workers in Mullingar and the surrounding areas. They have been assisting staff from St. Mary's, Mullingar General Hospital, St. Lomans and St. Peters in Castlepollard to name but a few, providing transport to and from work. With treacherous driving conditions on the road, the Mullingar unit's new 4x4 vehicle has come in very handy. The Mullingar Unit's three vehicles have travelled over 2,500 miles in the past 8 days covering areas as far as Longford, Castlepollard, Tullamore, Rathconrath and Ballymahon.Order of Malta volunteers have also been involved in providing community care visitation to the elderly who have been cut off by the bad weather, bringing supplies to them, prescriptions and just checking to make sure they are ok. Volunteers have been working up to 16 hour days to try and provide help to as many people as possible.Lt. Julia Dalton, Officer in Charge of the Mullingar Unit said âI would like to say a huge thank you to all our volunteers who have been working non stop to help the local community in any way they can. Also thanks to Midland Radio 3 for broadcasting the Mullingar Order of Malta helpline and getting the message out to the community that we are here and ready to help. For anyone in the community that needs our assistance during the cold weather our number is 087 9430954.â
