McSavage attack on council building
The council's award winning headquarters in Mullingar was the subject of a tirade by controversial comedian David McSavage at his show in the Arts Centre last Friday. The star of the Savage Eye received the biggest cheer of the night when he asked the audience: "What's the f***king story with the council building? How much did that cost?"He also joked that the executive must feel more important working in such fancy buildings.Built at a cost of â¬40m, the energy saving building, which opened in June 2009, has won a number of awards, including a LAMA award for Best Public Building and an International Architecture Award from The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and the European Center for Architecture Art Design. The 74,900-square-foot County Building incorporates low-energy, passive design concepts relying on a natural ventilation strategy throughout the building and maximised the use of natural light.Heating is supplied to the building by natural and mechanical means. The building has been designed to heat up during daytime operational hours by means of solar gain or radiation from the sun.The building was designed by the firm Bucholz McEvoy, which has offices in Dublin and Berlin. Here's the building: http://westmeathexaminer.ie/news/roundup/articles/2012/04/24/4010142-county-buildings-mullingar/
