Dempsey not in the running for Westmeath job
Former Westmeath senior football manager Luke Dempsey has told the Westmeath Examiner that he has no intention of seeking his old job as long as incumbent Pat Flanagan wants to remain in the post.Dempsey has distanced himself from any notion that he will be a contender for the role, when Flanagan's future as senior and U21 manager comes up for decision at a meeting of Westmeath Football Board tonight (8pm, Cusack Park). The former Carlow boss admitted that he was approached by one or two clubs in Westmeath, who wanted to propose him as an alternative choice to Flanagan.Interest in Dempsey's availability was piqued after an interview in a recent edition of the Westmeath Topic, in which the St Joseph's, Rochfortbridge teacher expressed an interest in getting back to some form of management in Westmeath."It became blown out of all proportion though," he said. "What I said was that now that I had finished in Carlow, I'd be interested in getting back into management in Westmeath in some shape or form, be it with a club, at underage level, or whatever."I didn't discuss the senior job. I was approached by one or two clubs, but I told them that as long as Pat Flanagan was in charge, and as long as he wanted the job, I would not put my name forward."Dempsey heaped praise on Flanagan's performance as manager during 2012, when the Clara man guided the Lake County to some outstanding league results, after which they retained their Division 2 status. They also came within a whisker of toppling Kerry in a memorable All-Ireland Qualifier at Cusack Park."As far as I'm concerned Pat has the job after the year he had, and I can see no logical reason why he wouldn't," said Dempsey.
