Final call for Westmeath Silver Surfer nominations

The deadline for nominations in the Google Silver Surfer Awards with Age Action is approaching. People in Westmeath have until September 14 to nominate a friend, neighbour or relative who is over 50 and who has made modern technology a part of their daily life.Google and Age Action are searching for older people who have embraced the digital world in any way, whether they have sold their house online, like last year's overall winner Dorothy Harrington, or simply use the internet to keep in touch with their family around the world.Sinéad Gibney, head of Social Action at Google, said: "Everyone deserves their achievements to be recognised and this is especially true of older people who have taken the step of getting online. This step can intimidate many people so sharing these stories helps diminish that fear for others. At Google we believe the internet is for everyone, not just the young. By highlighting the achievements of a small group of Silver Surfers we hope to show everyone that it's never too late to get online."This is the fourth year of the Silver Surfer Awards, which celebrates older people and technology in Ireland. There are five award categories this year. The public can nominate someone for an award by filling in a form at www.ageaction.ie/silversurfer or by phoning Mark on 01 475 6989. The closing date for nominations is September 14.The winners of the Google Silver Surfer Awards with Age Action will be announced at an awards ceremony on October 2 at Google Headquarters in Dublin.
