Three all-Ireland titles for Westmeath in just 24 hours

How often does a county win three all-Ireland titles in 24 hours?That's what happened last weekend, when some of Westmeath's finest sporting ambassadors retained national titles in handball and U16 hurling, as well as winning an all-Ireland in camogie.The first two came on Saturday evening, when Mullingar's Robbie McCarthy defended his M Donnelly GAA Handball All-Ireland Open Singles 60x30 Championship softball title, beating Dubliner Eoin Kennedy 21-16, 21-12 at Abbeylara (see page 21).The win keeps McCarthy at the pinnacle of Irish handball, and is ideal preparation for the world championships next month.At the same time, Westmeath trounced Kerry in the final of a blitz-style All-Ireland U16 B hurling tournament, held in Mullingar and surrounding districts (page 22). Delvin's Darragh Clinton was the star of the show as the Lakesiders defeated the Kingdom 4-11 to 2-3, capturing their third consecutive all-Ireland title.Finally, on Sunday, Westmeath's adult camogie team exorcised the ghosts of last year's defeat to Armagh, with a fine 1-14 to 2-6 win over Dublin in the final of the All-Ireland junior A championship (page 23).A Denise McGrath goal and points from Dinah Loughlin helped Noel Boyce's charges grind out a result to seal promotion to the junior premier grade in 2013.There were tremendous celebrations as the girls brought the Nancy Murray Cup back.
