James on a training run... he's hoping the Mizen to Malin trip will be better than the night he attempted cycling to Dungarvan, County Waterford.

Mr Crumb cyclist's Rocket Run for Temple Street

James Smith, a 45-year-old employee of Mr Crumb in Finea, took up cycling two years ago "to get fit and lose weight", and now he's planning to cycle from Mizen Head to Malin Head - solo, non-stop and in one day."I'll be setting off from the most southern tip of Ireland, Mizen Head in County Cork, at 6pm on Saturday (September 22) and will keep going non-stop, cycling through the night and all day, until I reach the most northern point, Malin Head in County Donegal, a total of 600km," said James. He points out that other cyclists have done the same route, but not in one go - the average time for completion is five days. His efforts are in aid of Temple Street Children's Hospital Charity."In addition to donations, I want to get the word out that if any cycling clubs along the way would like to join me, I would love to see them on the road - all support much appreciated. I've put the itinerary on Facebook (www.facebook.com/rocketrunireland) so that if anyone fancies seeing a madman on two wheels...!" said James.Fortunately he has "a wonderful family, my wife Cathy, daughter Olivia (13) and son Rory (7), who are very supportive and understanding".James's target is to a raise at least €2,000 for Temple Street.See www.facebook.com/rocketrunireland; and www.mycharity.ie/event/bungobarr; contact James: 087 785 1778 and jamespatricksmith@eircom.net.
