Christian Brother facing 18 charges of indecent assault

A Christian Brother who was attached to St Mary’s CBS in Mullingar for a number of years is facing 18 charges of indecent assault on two boys during his time in the town.

Thomas McCarry, with an address at Clareville, 89a, Finglas Road, Glasnevin, Dublin 11 appeared before Judge Seamus Hughes at Mullingar District Court today, Thursday February 21.

Inspector Dermot Drea appeared for the DPP and the defendant was represented by solicitor, Dara Robinson.

Thomas McCarry is charged with indecently the boys on dates between January 1, 1984 and June 30, 1985. A total of 18 charges were preferred against him.

Det Garda Eric Naughten, Mullingar told the court he arrested the accused at his home in Dublin at teatime yesterday Wednesday February 20 and took him to Mullingar Garda Station. He had replied ‘no comment’ in reply to each charge.

Insp Drea, who advised Judge Hughes that the case is to dealt with on indictment, sought a number of conditions in relation to Thomas McCarry’s bail application.

The accused is to reside at the address provided to the court, sign on each Sunday at Mountjoy Garda Station, have no contact with those named on the charges and surrender his passport.

Following an application by Mr Robinson, Judge Hughes allowed the defendant to retain his passport, noting that the charges “are of some vintage”.

Judge Hughes remanded the defendant on bail to appear before Mullingar District Court again April 11.
