Anti-property tax meeting in Mullingar this evening
The Greville Arms Hotel, Mullingar will be the venue for a seminar tonight (Wednesday April 10, 7pm) given by a group of people organising a unique form of legal challenge to Government-imposed household and property taxes.
Members of the 'Attack the Tax' campaign (www.attackthetax.com) will take their 'NOPe' (No Property Tax) tour to Mullingar with a claim that property and household taxes are "illegal, unlawful and unconstitutional," and that you do not have to pay "unless you consciously consent/agree to paying it".
The campaign was organised in support of a Mayo man who has become the first person charged with non-declaration of the household charge.
In Mullingar tonight, 'Attack the Tax' activists will explain why they believe the taxes are unlawful, and will outline their programme of resistance.
Central to this is a proposal to sign people up - at just €2.50 a head - as shareholders in a limited company known as a 'Special Purpose Vehicle'.
Activists say that as shareholders in the SPV, people will be exempt from paying household and property taxes pending the outcome of a legal challenge against the taxes, which has been lodged in the Supreme Court.
"If the legal challenge is successful, you will never have to pay the tax," a statement from the 'Attack the Tax' campaigners says.
"There is absolutely no liability to the shareholder, as all liability will be with the Limited Company, 'Special Purpose Vehicle'.
"The case to make this tax illegal is winnable and the more shareholders on board the stronger the case will be.
"If up to 60% or more homeowners sign up and are involved in the case, Government will no longer have a mandate from the people to implement such an unjust tax on people's homes."
