Let's band together for the IF Campaign, says Oxfam Ireland Mullingar shop
Oxfam Ireland’s shop in Mullingar is joining the biggest fight against hunger in a decade by stocking wristbands for the Enough Food for Everyone IF campaign.
The campaign brings together 170 charities, churches and unions to press world leaders at the G8, to be held in the North in June, to act on hunger.
Available for a suggested donation of €1, the wristbands come with a choice of four IF logo colours – orange, yellow, purple and blue. Wear one and you’ll show your solidarity with other IF supporters right across the country.
Trudi Soysal, manager of the Oxfam Mullingar shop on Oliver Plunkett Street, said: “The world produces enough food for everyone. Yet one in eight people will go to bed hungry tonight and over two million children die from malnutrition each year. We want people in Westmeath to add their support to this campaign to tackle hunger and wearing an IF campaign wristband is a fantastic way to start.
“It’s so exciting that Ireland is going to be at the centre of this campaign in June, when world leaders come to Fermanagh for the G8. The charities, unions and churches which are behind the IF campaign are urging people across Ireland to send a strong message that they want leaders to take action to take action that will put us on the road towards ending hunger when they meet here. Now is the perfect time to get involved and show your support”.
This game-changing campaign is already uniting many thousands of supporters. All are determined to ensure our leaders take decisive – and life-saving – action to help end global hunger.
The white band, which can be customised with a choice of moveable coloured ‘IF’ tokens, is available in the Oxfam Ireland shop. All money raised will go towards increasing awareness of hunger and policies to tackle it.
The IF campaign was launched in January by charities that share the vision of a world without hunger. Across the world, food prices are higher than ever. Even in Ireland, many hard-working people struggle to find the money to feed their families.
But progress in tackling hunger can be made this year, IF world leaders listen to us and take action on four big IFs:
IF we meet our aid promises giving the poorest people the power to feed themselves
IF we stop corporate tax dodging
IF we stop poor communities being forced off their land and use land for food, not fuel
IF we force governments and corporations to be fair and open about their impact on the global food system.
