Labour man makes history is last Cathaoirleach
Labour man, Councillor Pat Collins, made history last night as Mullingar Town Council’s latest and last Cathaoirleach.
His elevation to chair was proposed by Cllr Detty Cornally (Lab) and seconded by Cllr Ruth Illingworth at last nights annual general meeting in Market House.
Cllr Collins was handed over the chain of office by outgoing Cathaoirleach, Labour’s Cllr Gerry Sheridan, who thanked members for their cooperation over the last year and for leaving “politics outside the door”.
Cllr Collins said it was a “bit of a sad evening for everyone” seeing as this is the last year of Mullingar Town Council, a body which has been in existence since 1856:
“It is sad that local politics is going in that direction.”
The honour of Leas Cathaoirleach was awarded to Fianna Fail’s Cllr Ken Glynn, who was surprised by his nomination, proposed by Labour’s Cllr Mick Dollard and seconded by FF’s Cllr Aidan Davitt.
“I wasn’t expecting that. It’s a great honour however unexpected,” mumbled a surprised Cllr Glynn.
