Dogs dumped over fence at rescue centre

A local animal rescue group want to know the identity of the person who dumped two dogs over their fence earlier this week.

The two dogs, pictured right, were dropped over the fence of Friends of Animals Mullingar’s Cullionbeg base late on Monday night under the cover of darkness.

Speaking to the Westmeath Examiner, the charity’s founder Mary Chundee voiced her anger at the manner at which the two mixed breed dogs, which she believes are around a year old and may be siblings, were left without her consent.

“They were left over the fence at around 11pm on Monday. They do seem to be happy, they do seem to have been reared together if they are not siblings. They could be related even though they look very different, but that wouldn’t be unusual. They are young and happy.”

“What I want to know is: who did this? Why were they put over here? If there is a photograph surely someone will recognise them.”

The rescue centre, which Mary founded in 1977, currently has 35 dogs and she says that, at present, they have neither the space nor resources for more dogs.

“The phone has been ringing all morning for us to take in dogs and I just have keep refusing otherwise we would have 50 dogs and we don’t have the money for that.”
