Robbery alleged motive for Mullingar man's murder

It is alleged that the possible motive for the murder of 63-year-old Thomas Horan, originally from Mullingar, could be robbery.

Investigations are ongoing in to the death of Mr Horan, who was found dead at his apartment in Dublin’s Ringsend on Monday morning last, January 6.

Following the results of a postmortem carried out yesterday (Wednesday January 8), State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy, established that Mr Horan, with an address at Cambridge Court, had died violently.

Superintendent Dave Taylor said gardaí were now treating the incident as murder, and 27-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman, were arrested yesterday afternoon.

They are currently being held at Donnybrook and Irishtown Garda Stations under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

The body of Mr Horan was discovered by a friend at his home in a complex for senior citizens where he had been living for around four years.

He was described by Superintendent Dave Taylor as a man who lived quietly and “liked his music”.

Cambridge Court is a sheltered housing complex for senior citizens run by Dublin City Council.

Gardaí have appealed to anyone who may have been in the Cambridge Court/Road area between 10pm on Sunday 5 January and 4am on 6 January to contact Irishtown Garda Station on 01 6669600, the Garda Confidential line 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
