Heslin to captain UCD during Sigerson Cup

Westmeath and St Loman's, Mullingar star John Heslin will captain UCD for their forthcoming Sigerson Cup football campaign, it has been announced.

The former Coláiste Mhuire, Mullingar student played a key role in getting John Divilly's troops to the O'Byrne Cup semi-final recently, and scored 1-5 as UCD were well beaten by a free-scoring Kildare outfit last Sunday.

UCD have won the Sigerson Cup a record 32 times, but with a packed field including University of Ulster (Jordanstown), UCC, DIT, DCU and NUI Maynooth, among others, Heslin and co have their work cut out to secure a first cup win for the Belfield students since 1996.

The last Westmeath man to captain a Sigerson Cup-winning team was Mullingar Shamrocks' Kieran Gavin (DCU, 2012).

Heslin's St Loman's colleague, Paul Sharry, was recently confirmed as Westmeath's senior football captain for 2014.

Both men were joint captains when the Lakepoint Park club won its first Westmeath SFC title in 50 years last October.
