Westmeath drawn away to Cavan in first round of Qualifiers
By Kieran Galvin
Westmeath have been drawn against Cavan in the first round of the All-Ireland SFC Qualifiers.
It will be the first ever senior championship meeting between the counties.
Cavan will have home advantage in the Round 1B clash which is due to take place on Saturday, June 28.
Despite their poor showing in that controversial clash against Armagh yesterday, the Breffni County will be difficult to defeat on home soil.
However, Westmeath fans will probably be pleased that their county avoided the losers of next weekend’s Tyrone v Monaghan clash, and also Down.
Cavan are known for their very defensive style of play and Paul Bealin’s side will have to devise a way to break through their blanket defence. Interestingly, Bealin is a former manager of Cavan club side, Mullahoran.
The draw was made on RTE Radio 1 earlier this morning. Teams on the 'B' side (including Westmeath) could not meet teams on the 'A' side. All the games are listed below.
Westmeath's neighbours Longford have been handed a tough task against Division 1 finalists Derry, while Offaly will must travel to Wicklow.
Teams on the ‘B’ side are due to play their first round games on June 28, while the Round 1A games will be played on June 21.
Venues, times and dates are to be confirmed by the GAA's Central Competitions Control Committee (CCCC) tomorrow (Tuesday).
