Body recovered from Royal Canal in Mullingar

The gardaí in Mullingar have confirmed that a body has been recovered from the Royal Canal close to Loreto College this lunchtime. The body, which may have been in the water for some time, was spotted shortly after lunch and the emergency services were alerted.

It is unclear whether the body is that of a male or female. It was recovered from the water shortly after 2pm and was transferred to the Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore where a post mortem will be carried out.

This afternoon gardaí commenced the task of attempting to identify the remains in order to notify next of kin.
