Moyvoughley to mark centenary of WW1 beginning
Plans are well advanced in Moyvoughley to mark the centenary of the beginning of World War 1.
Moyvoughley, close to Moate, is one of a handful of communities in the country with a WW1 memorial plaque in honour of its dead.
Nineteen men from the locality enlisted with the allied forces between 1914 and 1918 and sadly some paid the ultimate price.
To mark the centenary of the start of World War 1 a committee has been formed to organise an appropriate event and produce a booklet to honour those from the area who fought in the Great War.
The committee consists of Mary Buckley, Peter Cunningham, Gerry Kerrigan, Joe Flanagan, Michael McCauley and Seamus McDermott.
Since early February the committee has been researching into the participation of these men and to what happened to those who survived. Some wonderful material has been uncovered to date - photographs, medals, paper cuttings, etc. and the committee is appealing for anyone with relevant information to come forward with it irrespective to how small it may be.
They are particularly interested in speaking to relatives of the Gill and Seery families of Clonthread and the Ward and Donlon families of the Rookery, Moyvoughley.
The Community Centre Committee are backing this project fully and will play a big part in the final format of the celebration which is planned for late autumn.
