Rathowen shows best side to pride of place judges

In unpredictable Ireland, even the sun shone as the adjudicators in the all island Pride of Place competition ran their critical eye over the village of Rathowen yesterday.

The north Westmeath townland was one of two Westmeath entrants in the 2014 Pride of Place competition and no stone was left unturned to showcase the village,

The adjudicators, former county managers, Rita McNulty and Declan Nelson, were accompanied by Maurice Inglis, national co-ordinator of the Pride of Place competition, and Annette Barr-Jordan, as they arrived in Rathowen to a tumultuous reception from residents.

Following a PowerPoint display highlighting all that Rathowen has to offer, the judges were taken on a whistle stop tour of the local area, taking in historical, recreational and industrial outlets, as well as meeting well known luminaries.

On their return to the village the visitors were treated to a sumptuous meal, prepared by members of Rathowen ICA, assisted by John Rogan of Rogan’s Smoked Foods.

Prior to their departure the adjudicators were treated to a display of martial arts by young members of the Rathowen branch of Matsubayoshi Shorinkyu.
