Mullingars bridge and amenity centre features on rts guess whos dead

Mullingar's Bridge and Amenity Centre is set to feature in new RTÉ documentary Guess Who's Dead tonight at 10.15pm.

Presented by Ardal O'Hanlon, the documentary focuses on Ireland's obsession with death notices: in the newspaper, on local radio, or online.

Ardal chatted to Murt Hanley, Philip Morris and Maureen Comack while filming in Mullingar on the Irish perception of death.

"It's a uniquely ingrained cultural hunger for the bare facts of a death," commented Ardal.

"The Death Notice is a unique symbol of Ireland's healthy attitude towards death (as long as it's someone else's)," he conined.

"The deaths" are the first page any self-respecting Irish person turns to in the papers every day, driven by some innate DNA: the desire simply to know who has died.

"It's a habit, an instinct, a tradition handed down from generation to generation, and it is the opening line in any phone call from any Irish mother, "Guess who's dead".

Ardal listens to the people around the country who share an interest, indeed a passion, in keeping up with the death notices - whatever media it may be on.
