Camogie girls win while hurlers taste defeat in derry
The Westmeath senior camogie team got their league campaign off to the best possible start with a morale boosting two point win over Wexford in Archerstown this afternoon.
The Lakeside girls, who won promotion from Division 3 last season, had to dig deep at times during a game played in less than perfect conditions, but were well worth their victory over their opponents from the south east. Full time score: Westmeath 0-9 Wexford 0-7.
It was not such good news for Westmeath senior hurlers who for the second year running tasted defeat at the hands of Derry. Michael Ryan’s men were leading by 3-10 to 1-15 as the game entered its dying moments but a late, late Declan Foley goal ensured victory for the home team. Final score: Derry 2-15 Westmeath 3-10.
In Lakepoint Park this afternoon, the Westmeath senior ladies football team suffered another defeat in the league this time at the hands of old rivals Cavan, final score Westmeath 0-5 Cavan 0-10.
