Choral societys spring concert is on march 8
Anois teacht an Earraigh, beidh an lá ag dul chun síneadh, as the poet Raftery reminds us.
And, as surely as the days are stretching, hinting at the promise of the year ahead, music lovers can look forward to Mullingar Choral Society’s Spring Concert in the Cathedral of Christ the King on Sunday March 8 at 8pm.
Choral Society president, Jimmy Dalton, says: “Our rehearsals are going well. This year, we will be performing major works by Brahms and Fauré and will be teaming up again with our old friends, City of Dublin Chamber Orchestra, to make memorable choral music.
“As a special treat this year, we will also be joined by noted soloists Sylvia O’Brien, soprano, and Philip O’Reilly, bass. All in all, it promises to be a memorable evening for all music lovers.”
Noted for its live performances, the Choral Society has broken new ground by producing a CD of the highlights of last year’s Spring Concert. It features international star soprano, Ailish Tynan, and City of Dublin Chamber Orchestra.
“I can assure all our patrons that this recording is an absolute gem!” says Jimmy.
“Ailish’s voice is glorious, as ever, and the choir has never sounded better. We have selected 12 well-known pieces from our Spring Concert, including Panis Angelicus, Nella Fantasia and Easter Hymn, in a collection that is sure to delight all music lovers.” The CD, price €12, will be on sale at the concert on March 8 and is currently available from Days Bazaar and from all choir members.
It is hard to believe that the Choral Society is now almost 50 years in existence, having been formed in 1968, with Fr Frank McNamara as its first music director. Continuity has been key to the its well-being and current director, Fergus O’Carroll, is now in his 16th consecutive season. Accompanist Fintan Farrelly has been with the choir even longer!
Musical leadership has been enhanced this year by the addition to the team of Thomas Kehoe as principal guest conductor. Jimmy says: “We are fortunate indeed to have the services of Fergus, Fintan and Tom. They ensure that the choir continues to be challenged to produce choral performances of the highest standard.”
So, much to look forward to in the magnificent setting that is the Cathedral of Christ the King. Tickets for the performance may be purchased from choir members, from Days Bazaar and online at eventbrite.ie.
