How would you like to celebrate the Easter Rising Centenary?
A countywide brainstorming session has been launched to decide how best to mark the occasion locally, and will culminate in a public meeting next month.
The appeal was launched at the monthly meeting of Westmeath County Council on Monday, by the CEO, Pat Gallagher who explained that each county is putting together its own plan. He wants to hear what the people of Westmeath want.
Mr Gallagher has set up a steering committee headed by Hugh O’Reilly, senior executive officer, community development, with acting county librarian, Paula O’Dornan, arts officer, Miriam Mulrennan, heritage officer, Bernadette Solon, and heritage forum members, Gearoid O’Brien and Seamus O’Brien.
In March a public meeting will be held to hear the views of the people on what should be included in the celebratory plans. After this a draft plan will be sent to the Minister for the Heritage, Heather Humphreys who has indicated that funding will be made available this year for next year’s celebrations.
Meanwhile, the chairman of the county council, Cllr Paddy Hill will meet with the minister this week to discuss the matter.
Cllr Tom Farrell, at the monthly meeting, welcomed the all-county approach while Cllr Paul Hogan welcomed the setting up of a steering committee to oversee the celebrations.
Cllr Frank Keena suggested that any local descendants of the 1916 volunteers should be invited to attend the celebrations.
Mr Gallagher said they would welcome any ideas put forward.
