New Mullingar Ladies Rugby recruits sought
It’s rugby season again and with the men’s World Cup well and truly under way, it’s time for the ladies of Mullingar to come to Cullion and see what is happening at the club.
The Women’s World Cup is set to be played in Ireland, so there is no better time to get yourselves down to Cullion and give the wonderful sport of rugby a TRY.
Rugby is a sport that has a place on the team for everybody no matter what your skills, fitness levels or body shape is. This season at Culllion is going to be better than ever due to the installation of a new synthetic pitch, which means players can train no matter the weather.
The club's ladies teams have gone from strength to strength over the past few years, with last season being the most successful yet. On the back of their League and Cup wins last season, the Senior Ladies have been promoted to the AIL. Also one of the ladies, Clodadh Cleary, will swap jerseys for part of the season to play for Connacht senior ladies squad.
The U18s had a great season last year making the semi-final of the Leinster League. Three of the U18s ladies - Katie Heffernan, Jane Leahy and Eadaoín Liddy - tried out for and made the Midlands squad. Jane and Katie then went on to be picked for the Leinster U18s squad, making their club and coaches extremely proud of them.
The girls played in the Interpros on Saturday last against Connacht and Munster, with the triumph going to the Leinster U18s as they won both games. The will play again in two weeks' time against Ulster.
The superstar of the club, Katie Heffernan also got her first cap for Ireland by playing on the U18s Sevens squad in Belgium this month; not only did Katie play all the matches in the World Cup blitz, but became one of the top try scorers for the Ireland U18s Sevens team.
There is no stopping Katie with her super speed and cunning side-stepping. Katie has always been one of the most easy-going but enthusiastic players with a constant willingness to try and learn new skills, so it is no surprise to her coaches how well she has done.
The U15s girls won the Leinster League in 2014 and also made it to the semi-final of the Leinster Cup last year. They are a squad to be watched this season growing in numbers, confidence with lifelong friendships being formed.
The girls went of a tour to Galway last year and drew in the final of the Ireland Blitz. The club welcomes on board their new coaches this season, who will no doubt make the girls shine like the rugby stars they have become.
Mullingar Rugby Club is always accepting new members, and invites all ladies to give it a try. Who knows? Maybe one of you could be stepping out with the Irish Ladies team one day, or heading off to the Olympics with the Ireland Sevens Squad.
