Whelehans Phamacys Trish Wallace: Psoriasis Part 2

Psoriasis Part 2

The most common is plaque psoriasis which usually affects knees, elbows, scalp and lower back but can vary in size and number. These plaques are usually itchy and painful and can crack and bleed.

Other types of psoriasis

Less common forms of psoriasis include Guttate psoriasis which is a sudden onset of small, red teardrop shaped patches and accompanies streptococcal throat infection, but usually disappears in a couple of weeks. Another less common form is flexural psoriasis which presents in skin folds such as armpits or groin due to the presence of sweat in these areas. The plaques are red, shiny and smooth with no scales; painful skin tears can accompany this form of psoriasis or a yeast like fungal infection.

Relief

La Roche Posay® have some amazing products specifically for psoriasis, drastically improving severity. Kerium DS Crème® is a pro-desquamating moisturiser (designed for the face, but can be used as a target treatment in most areas) which helps help rid skin of plaques or flakiness while also moisturising and hydrating the affected area and help to minimise another flare up for up to 6 weeks! For psoriasis on the scalp, then Kerium DS shampoo® is going to dramatically ease symptoms. It’s a gentle shampoo formula which rapidly eliminates dandruff and only needs to be used every second or third time you wash your hair, so you can still use your regular anti-dandruff shampoo. It also has a very subtle scent unlike many of the coal tar shampoos on the market.
