MULLINGAR MUNICIPAL DISTRICT: the 'mystery' of the patched up road
Cllr Ken Glynn has asked that the L5144 road, known as the bog road, between Ballinea and Shandonagh, be included in resurfacing works in the upcoming budget, and also asked that remedial works be carried out there in the interim.
Making the request at the last Mullingar Municipal District meeting, he was informed that restoration works had already been carried out on a portion of that road, while the remainder had been patched.
“Well this is a mystery,” remarked the FF man.
“As far as local people are concerned, there’s no work been done on that particular road.”
He also asked that Mullingar Municipal District alleviate the regular flow of rainwater from the R392 which lodges outside the entrance to Geraghty’s house in Shandonagh on wet days and was told that the drainage system at that location has been jetted out recently.
“The problem is the water is flowing down the hill and lodging outside this gentleman’s house,” Cllr Glynn said.
He went on to asked that the car park beside the fire station be swept on a more regular basis to remove broken glass.
“This car park has been swept recently and will be included on the Sunday route for the sweeper as this car park is full with commuters during weekdays,” was the written response.
Gainstown Church
Cllr Penrose for the car park at Gainstown Church to be resurfaced as the surface there is “unravelling”.
He was informed that as the car park was extended by the parish, it was not a matter for Westmeath County Council.
Cummerstown junction
A call for the Mullingar Municipal District office to prepare a design to stagger the dangerous junction at Cummerstown, Collinstown was made by Cllr Frank McDermott.
The FG man was happy to hear that the Roads and Transportation section had already submitted an application for funding for safety improvement works on regional and local roads.
“This junction is listed on the application and, subject to funding being made available in 2017, a design will be carried out,” was the written response.
Cllr McDermott asked for the road (L15463) off the N52 east of Clonmellon, to be repaired and was told that potholes will be filled on this road in the coming days.
Clondilever Gigginstown road
Cllr Frank McDermott asked the Municipal District to bring forward the three-year plan for the Clondilever to Gigginstown road (L5624), as it is in bad condition but was informed by the municipal district office that the road was in not included in the three-year Roads Programme.
“This particular section is probably the worst section of road, there only small sections that need to be repaired. I appeal to the engineer to have another look at it,” said Cllr McDermott.
“It’s a thorn in my side for the last two years. There’s only two sections that would need to be done. Every other road is looking well, this is just going on and on,” he said.
He was told by area director Kieran Martin that maybe surface dressing could be applied there and he would get the engineer to have another look.
