Coláiste Mhuire TY students stage comedy classic

Months of hard work from the TY students at Coláiste Mhuire come to fruition tomorrow evening, Tuesday May 15, when the curtain goes up on their production of the Mel Brooks comedy classic, The Producers.

One of the most acclaimed comedies of the 1960s, The Producers created plenty of controversy when it was first released as a film with its risque plot involving Adolf Hitler, Nazi war criminals, accounting fraud and ditsy Swedish bombshells.

The leading parts of Max and Leo are being played by Paddy Rafferty and Tao Caldwell respectively. The large cast also includes ten TY students from Loreto College.
The Producers tells the story of diminishing Broadway producer Max Bialystock who along with his accountant Leo Bloom, figure out that they could make far more money with a flop of a show than with a hit.

To this end, they produce a musical called Springtime for Hitler written by escaped Nazi Franz Liebken. Then they get the insanely flamboyant Roger De Bris to direct. Finally, they hire as a lead actress the loopy Swedish bombshell Ulla (whose last name has over 15 syllables). 

Speaking to the Westmeath Examiner, TY co-ordinator Georgina Hourican, paid tribute to the cast for their hard work and dedication. She also thanked director Daniel Egerton, choreographer Sarah Ann Meehan and Sean Lynch from the Arts Centre for their contribution over the last few months.

The Producers runs for three consecutive nights, tomorrow evening Tuesday May 15, with the curtain rising at 8pm.
