Finian is going for gold
Mullingar man, Finian Farrell is among 24 competitors who will represent Transplant Team Ireland at the 10th European Transplant and Dialysis Sports Championships next week.
The championships are being held in Cagliari, Sardinia, commencing on Sunday next, June 17, and run until June 24.
Some 25 countries, incorporating 470 participants, are expected to take part and Ireland are expected to field the oldest competitor in Antrim man, John McAleer, who is 80.
Last year, Finian came home with a bronze medal when he and his table tennis doubles partner, Matthew McNieve from Mayo, finished third in the event.
Finian narrowly missed out on an individual bronze medal in the singles event in his age group.
His many friends and supporters in Mullingar will be hoping he can go that extra yard this year and pick up a gold medal.
Prior to their departure the team met with All-Ireland Senior Footballer, Peter Canavan, who told the team members they were an inspiration.
“Be confident in your abilities when competing at the European Championships and show how much can be achieved by embracing life through sport,” he said by way of encouragement.
