Flower show bites the dust
The drought – and the lack of any indications of rain into the future – has led the organisers of the annual Mullingar and District Gardening Club flower show to cancel this year's event.
It is the first time in the 42-year history of the show that it has been called off.
The decision was made in support of the bid to conserve water, and in light of the hosepipe ban and the difficulties with growing crops and flowers, says Danny Dunne, chairperson of Mullingar and District Gardening Club.
The flower show was to have taken place in O'Meara's Garden Centre on August 18.
“We just want to let our patrons and supporters know and to support the conservation of water in these difficult times,” says Mr Dunne.
