Divisive N4 sculpture to be moved

The much criticised sculpture on the N4 just outside Mullingar is set to be moved in the coming months.

Installed in late 2013 on the N4 at Clongowney following the completion of the The Downs Grade Separation project, the Way Ahead public art piece by Dublin native Bob Quinn is an abstract representation of Aoibh, the mother of the Children of Lir.

The sculpture is made from corten steel and has a rust-like surface. Due primarily to its rusty appearance, the piece’s suitability as a landmark on the outskirts of the county town has divided public opinion since its erection.

One of its most vocal critics has been Cllr Mick Dollard, who inquired at the July meeting of Mullingar Municipal District when the artwork would be moved. He was informed that it would be relocated in the 2018 works programme.

Speaking last year about the sculpture, Cllr Dollard said that it is “a poor image to have at the entrance to the town of Mullingar”.

In an emailed response to a query from this paper about where the sculpture would be relocated, director of services Martin Murray said:

“MMD are currently reviewing the location of this artistic piece with a view to re-locating within the environs of the Town.

“MMD are currently liaising with stakeholders to determine a more suitable location.”
