Delvin girl lines out with Rory Best

Shauna Williams, age 8, from Delvin was among more than 100 budding young rugby stars who lined out in De La Salle Rugby Club for a masterclass with Gland Slam winning captain and Glenisk ambassador Rory Best. 

The group of boys and girls aged 7-12 years spent the morning developing their skills and knowledge of the game under the encouraging eye of the Ireland rugby hero and a team of IRFU rugby coaches.

They enjoyed a variety of coaching drills aimed at improving the fundamentals of the game in a fun filled environment. 

Along with the coaching drills, the children were treated to an interactive workshop helping them to understand the importance of a healthy, balanced diet which was delivered by IRFU Performance Nutritionist Marcus Shortall. 

The IRFU also educated the children on the values of rugby such as teamwork, respect, discipline and sportsmanship. 

Ireland’s rugby stars of the future had the opportunity to get up close and personal with Best during a fun Q&A and also pose alongside him with the NatWest 6 Nations Trophy and Triple Crown. 

Each camp participant left with a Glenisk goodie bag which included the new 2018/19 Glenisk Official Irish Rugby Trading Cards, which will be available in packs of GO-YO Yogurt Tubes in the coming weeks.

Rory Best said: “It has been great to be involved in the Glenisk Rugby Training Camps this year – to have the opportunity to pass on my knowledge of the game to the future generation of rugby and to see the talent among young rugby players across the country. 

“I hope each child goes away from the session having learned not only some new rugby skills but also importance of nutrition for a healthy body, as well as core values such as respect, discipline and teamwork. 

“These are not only important on the field of play but in everyday life. And who knows, maybe we’ll even see some of these kids lining out in a green jersey for Ireland in a few years’ time.”
