Patients report positive experiences of hospital care in Midland Regional Hospital Mullingar, but there is still room for improvement

The results of the 2018 National Patient Experience Survey for the Midland Regional Hospital Mullingar have been published at www.patientexperience.ie

The second year of the survey asked patients about their experiences of hospital care in order to find out what is working well in our health service, and what needs to be improved.

The National Patient Experience Survey is the largest survey of its kind in Ireland. Almost 300 patients from Midland Regional Hospital Mullingar participated in the 2018 survey, resulting in a strong response rate of 48%.

Director of the survey, Rachel Flynn, said: “The majority of participants from Midland Regional Hospital Mullingar reported positive experiences in hospital.

"83% of participants said they had ‘good’ or ‘very good’ overall experiences, compared with 84% nationally. The hospital achieved similar scores to the national average across every stage of care.”

"Several areas of good experience were identified.

"These were areas that were related to participants’ overall experiences and where participants gave above-average ratings.

For example, patients of Midland Regional Hospital Mullingar were very positive about the level of respect and dignity they received, both in the emergency department and throughout the hospital. Patients were also highly satisfied with the level to which they were involved in their own care.

However, there were also several areas needing improvement. Patients highlighted issues relating to communication with doctors and insufficient information provided to them during the discharge process.

Furthermore, many patients said that they left the hospital not fully informed about how to manage their condition at home.

There were no improvements since 2017 in the scores for the various stages of care. The findings of this year’s survey will help the hospital to improve patients’ experiences of care in the hospital.
