Statement from county council on roadworks in Mullingar town centre
Mullingar Town Centre Street Enhancement Works Update
The Mullingar Street Enhancement project is progressing well to schedule and will be completed in August 2019.
The project is co-funded under the EU Urban Designated Fund and involves significant high quality civic area enhancements at:
> Pearse Street - Castle Street junction;
> Market Square; and
> Dominick Square / Blackhall.
It also involves the provision of underground fibre ducting for intelligent traffic light systems, public lighting, planting, seating and street furniture.
The contractor is responsible for maintaining access for pedestrians and vehicles at all times and is working with traders to minimise the inconvenience to local residents, businesses and visitors while carrying out the works in a safe and efficient manner.
Temporary traffic lights at Dominick Square
Currently the contractor is constructing the permanent granite set pedestrian crossings on all approaches to Dominick Square.
These crossings are constructed in a phased process namely, excavation, concrete pour, and cobble lock.
The concrete and cobble lock then need 3 to 4 days to cure.
To minimise disruption these works have to be done a half road width at a time.
Works commenced on Wednesday 6th February and temporary traffic signals were installed at all four approaches to the Square; these will be in place for up to 4 weeks and motorists are advised to use alternate routes where possible.
The Council wish to apologise for any inconvenience and thank the public for their patience and support during this important development project that aims to reinvigorate residential and retail viability and contribute to the economic development of the town.
