Government not planning for hard border

The Department of Defece say the government are "not planning for a hard border on this island".

In response to the front page article in a recent edition of the Westmeath Examiner, discussing speculation that Columb Barracks might need reopen as a military base if there is a hard border after Brexit,  the Department said:

“Primary responsibility for the internal security of the state rests with the Minister for Justice and Equality and An Garda Síochána.

"Accordingly, responsibility for the security aspect of border control rests with An Garda Síochána.

"The Defence Forces may provide support to An Garda Síochána when requested to do so, in the provision of aid to the civil power, as set out in the White Paper on Defence.

“The Defence Forces at all times keep operational plans under constant review. There is ongoing close liaison between An Garda Síochána and the Defence Forces regarding security matters, including through regular co-ordination and liaison meetings.

“Prudent planning in relation to all situations that may require a Defence Forces response is part and parcel of the day to day operations of the Defence Forces.

“Examples of contingency planning include preparations for security situations, severe weather emergencies, high level visits and support for the Civil Authorities, for example the HSE and the Local Authorities.

“The Defence Forces are, and will continue, to engage in all such prudent planning in accordance with the roles assigned by government. This will be facilitated within existing resources.”
