The Downs win inaugural Ben Murray Cup contest
On Saturday last, The Downs GAA were honoured to remember our star in the sky Ben by hosting the inaugural Ben Murray U12 Tournament.
We had six teams participate from across Westmeath, Meath and Cavan namely The Downs, St Mary’s Rochfortbrige, Mullingar Shamrocks, Killucan, Gowna and Summerhill. Each team had the opportunity to play three games of football (30 minutes each) with each team having the opportunity to play in a final for either the Ben Murray Cup, The Downs Shield or The Downs Plate.
Despite the threat of bad weather, the elements held off by and large and the games went according to schedule. Ben Murray Cup winners were The Downs, beating St Mary’s Rochfortbridge. The Downs Shield winners were Gowna, beating Summerhill. The Downs Plate winners were Mullingar Shamrocks, beating Killucan. After the games we had a medal ceremony, with Boris and Alma Murray presenting the Cup to The Downs captain on the day, Alfie Murray. All the teams went back to the clubhouse for fine array of food and refreshments.
A great day was has by all. Special thanks to Sean Carroll, Darragh Monaghan and Oisín Murphy for refereeing games and Trudie Rowan for first aid. Michael Moloney was on PA duties, Sinead Scully ran the show and Bernie Conneely took wonderful photos.
