Wave of Light at Mullingar hospital

The exterior of Midland Regional Hospital Mullingar was lit up in pink and blue last Tuesday evening at 7pm as part of Wave of Light, an international event to Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day.

More than 80 buildings across the country, including the hospital and Mullingar Arts Centre, were lit up to mark the Irish leg of the event, which saw prominent buildings in each time zone light up at 7pm to create a “wave of light” across the world. The Irish leg of the event was organised by Féileacáin, the Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Association of Ireland.

Speaking to the Westmeath Examiner before the event, national organiser Nina Doyle said that the aim of the event is to honour the memory of all babies, who have passed on, whether through miscarriage, stillbirth or neonatal death. “We want every parent to feel that the buildings are lighting up for their baby, that their baby matters. It’s for everybody.” Féileacáin was formed by bereaved parents in 2009. Its volunteers provide a range of services, including support meetings, memory boxes (over 1000 were given out to families last year) and free counselling for parents and siblings.
